Miscellaneous Information | Today’s walk goes through Guilford County, population 550,000 and the third largest county in NC. We will pass Guilford College, which was founded by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1837 as a co-educational boarding school. It was originally for Quakers but accepted non-Quaker students by 1841. While still maintaining a commitment to Quaker values, the institution evolved into one serving young people of every religious affiliation and those with none. In the 1880s, New Garden Boarding School transitioned into a four-year liberal arts college and rechartered as Guilford College in 1888. It is the oldest coeducational college in the South, with male and female faculty and graduating both men and women. IPHONE users: As you arrive at each “stop” along the route, you must remove it in order to proceed to the next “stop.” BUT DO NOT REMOVE THE ROUTE STARTING POINT!! There may be stops included on routes that are strictly for directional purposes and not intended as a real “stop.” E.g., UPS Drop Box, a real estate company, a church. Safety: Obey all traffic laws. Use crosswalks and sidewalks wherever possible. When sidewalks are not available, generally it is recommended to walk against traffic but there may be times where the shoulder is wider walking WITH traffic. Be careful approaching curves and hills as visibility will be limited! Walk with a buddy. |
Each Google Map route will have a starting point and multiple stops.
iPhone users: when you arrive at a stop, you must remove the PREVIOUS starting point, making your current stop the NEW starting point.
Android users: As long as you “arrive” at each stop, it will automatically advance to the next one. Otherwise, you will have to remove a stop.
EXCEPTION: Do NOT remove any stops when you are in a dead zone! This will cancel the map and you will not be able to relaunch it.
Dead zone: in poor or no cell phone coverage, you will still be able to see the route since GPS continues to work. Just don’t exit the map or try to remove a stop or you will lose the route.
